Cambodia General Information / Don Bosco Moto-dop program / The House of the Street Poipet Child

Border children support team

Children that are daily working in the street of Poipet have problems in their families because illness,  violence or parents separate. Children of the street suffer lack of food, few sources of income, gambling and other vices. Adults are supposed to care of the children have a low level of education, have no skills and  limited awareness of child labor or trafficking. In general the population has limited access to health or medical services.

There is a lack of a community based emergency support. There is a complicated trafficking networking, limited law application, increasing drug abuse and many families are economically dependent on children.

We find cases of children "rented" to people in Thailand who use them to beg or sell in the streets. This kind of "rent-a-child" is made with the approval of their own parents.

It is estimated than 1,000 children cross the border for work every day. They are willingly or forced to work as beggars (a child in the casinos' area can earn around Bt 50 per day - U$ 1, 20, while in the streets of Thailand he or she can gain for their "owners" around Bt 1, 000 per month -U$ 25), moreover the children are used for smuggling goods, etc.

They are at risk to be abused, they can be easily lured into human trafficking. Around 580 children are being deported every month from Thailand according to the Deportation Statistics of 2004 - 2005. Around 80 - 100 children are seen staying overnight in the market and other public places of Poipet. They are at risk to use drug.

Objetives

It is our general objective to protect the rights and improve the quality of life of children in need of special protection at Poipet border.

They provide direct protection to children working at Poipet border who are abused by adults, authorities and shop owners. They prevent children working at Poipet border from falling into trafficking and sexual exploitation. They act as "watch-dogs" to contribute to the early detection of child trafficking, unsafe migration and cases of children in need of special protection.
